We strongly believe that a fuel surcharge should not be a profit center, or a sneaky way to impose hidden costs on customers.

Throughout most of our history, CDC did not even assess a fuel surcharge. A few years ago, when gas prices began escalating at a rate far exceeding inflation, we reluctantly decided to join our suppliers and industry peers in adding a fuel surcharge to each invoice. Unfortunately, as a distribution company with over 90 delivery trucks and service vans on the road each day, fuel is a significant cost of business.

However, we went about our surcharge in a unique way. Rather than use a fixed charge, we are upfront about the fact that our fuel surcharge will vary directly with our current fuel costs — both up and down. Should diesel and gas prices fall low enough, the fuel surcharge would even be eliminated entirely. Since we implemented our fuel surcharge, it has varied as low as $0.50 per invoice, and as high as $3.50 per invoice (during the Summer 2008 fuel price spike).

New York Historical Gas Price Fluctuations

6 Years Of Fuel Price Fluctuations

Recently, fuel prices have been on the rise again, and we have just adjusted our surcharge to $1.50 per invoice, as highlighted on the below chart:

Fuel Surcharge Chart March 2011

CDC's Fuel Surcharge Varies With Our Fuel Costs

Our “Fuel Cost” represents a mix of gas and diesel prices in the vicinity of our Garden City Park, NY warehouse. It is common for companies to raise fuel surcharges as their costs increase, but at Coffee Distributing Corp. we think it’s only fair to automatically pass along our savings to our customers when fuel costs come back down.

UPDATE 3/7/2011: For transparency, we will base our “average fuel cost” on the Department of Energy’s published Petroleum Administration for Defense District (PADD) data for the East Coast – New England Region, taking an average of the posted regular gasoline and diesel prices.

A typical Mars Drinks merchandiser has 18 drawers. However, there are 18 Alterra coffees, 9 Bright Teas, and 3 indulgent drink offerings to choose from — a total of up to 30 options. Are you forced to limit yourself to just 18 selections? Of course not!

In fact, you could easily offer all 30 drinks, plus a virtually-unlimited number of indulgent “two-pack” drink combinations, without taking up any additional space or increasing your Flavia budget. How? Split drawers!

Flavia Merchandiser with Alterra Coffee and Bright Tea

This 18-Drawer Merchandiser Offers 25 Selections Thanks To Split Drawers!

A merchandiser drawer filled with Alterra coffee holds 40 packets. A drawer of Bright Tea holds 80 packets (tea packets are thinner). Look inside the drawer and you will see grooves — slide in a divider, and you can easily split that drawer’s capacity between two drinks! We can provide both the divider and a new label for the front door, to represent both drinks. At a minimum, we suggest that all tea drawers be split, since so many tea packets can fit in one drawer.

To make this process as simple as possible, we are offering to build and deliver new drawers for you, for free. When you place your order, mention that you want to replace a single-drink drawer with a double-drink “split” drawer. We will prepare the label and insert the divider, and bring the new drawer with your next delivery. Simply slide out the old drawer and trade it with your delivery driver!

Remember that all Alterra Coffee and Bright Tea packets (except for Green Tea) are the same cost — so there is no risk in adding more drinks to your menu or trying out a rail of a new coffee or tea!

Sales Representative Bob Lewent snapped these photos at the opening of one of our newest customers, Grand Cafe Express at Tanger Mall in Riverhead, Long Island. Most of our customers are offices, but this is an example of a “wholesale” location — a coffee and snack bar that brews coffee for re-sale.

Green Mountain Branded Materials At Wholesale Customer

Green Mountain Brand Attracts Customers

Nearly everything you see in the above photos is being supplied by CDC. In terms of product, we are supplying Green Mountain coffee, paper cups, Snapple and Tropicana cold beverages, and assorted bagged snacks, such as the Frito Lay and Nabisco snack items pictured. We installed the thermal coffee brewer and cappuccino machine, and provided Green Mountain branded support materials such as signage, condiment trays, cup racks.

Bob serves both office and wholesale locations, and is an expert on our Green Mountain wholesale program. He can be reached via rlewent@cdccoffee.com or 1-800-356-8881 ext. 187.

Here’s another look at coffee prices, which seem to be going nowhere but up lately. As shown in the below chart, raw coffee prices are up by over 67% in the past 12 months, with much of the increase coming in the last 6 months or so.

Coffee Market January 18th 2011

If the market doesn’t turn soon, we can unfortunately expect another round of price increases from our roasters and suppliers in the near future. Keep in mind that our refreshments experts are always standing by to discuss alternatives to possibly save you money — for example, our own Estate Select coffee is less expensive than Green Mountain. In the single-cup world, Flavia is less expensive than Keurig, and pods beat both “big name” alternatives.

Green Mountain Wicked Winter Blend Now Available!

Wicked Winter Blend is available in 50/2.2 oz (X427) and 10 oz ground (GMWW10G).

Congratulations to Edgar, CDC’s December 2010 Employee of the Month!

Employee of the Month: December 2010

Edgar has now been with CDC for over six years. His work day starts at the crack of dawn, operating a forklift to help load our trucks in the morning and get our delivery route drivers on their way. The remainder of his shift is spent stocking our warehouse with newly received product, and rotating product to ensure freshness. His primary domain is the coffee section of our warehouse, including Alterra, Wolfgang Puck, Timothy’s, Starbucks, and Lavazza.
