At our last senior managers’ meeting, Juan from our operations crew was selected as Coffee Distributing Corp.’s October 2010 Employee of the Month!

Juan has a special role at CDC as an assistant to our Vice President of Operations. His duties include making emergency deliveries and helping to set up our booth at trade shows. He has been with Coffee Distributing Corp. for over 7 years.

Alterra Packets With Higher Coffee Content

The following Alterra coffee packets have higher gram throws than their Flavia predecessors:

  • Costa Rican (7.0 grams vs. 6.5 grams)
  • Ethiopia (9.0 grams vs. 7.0 grams)
  • French Roast (9.0 grams vs. 7.0 grams)
  • Kenya (8.0 grams vs. 7.0 grams)

Also note: Flavia Italian Roast (7.0 grams) has been discontinued. Its recommended replacements, Foundry Blend (9.0 grams) and Artisan Roast (10.0 grams) both have greater throw weights.

Also note: Flavia Intense Dark Roast contained inferior robusta coffee. Its replacement, Alterra Barista’s Blend, is 100% arabica!

The Coffee Market Is Still Percolating

It seems like only yesterday when we put up our What’s Up With Coffee Prices? post, examining the 44% rise in coffee commodity prices since the Summer.

Well since then, not even one month later, the coffee market has risen another 10%+.

November 8th Is Alterra Coffee Launch Day!

Over on our YouTube channel, CDC Sales Manager Rodney Turner explains our upcoming visit to each Flavia customer to prepare your Flavia merchandiser for the new Alterra Coffee and Bright Tea products. We will still be shipping Flavia coffee and tea for a month or so, but after that, they will be discontinued and replaced permanently.

CDC Sales Rep In The News

Bob Lewent is one of Coffee Distributing Corp’s top sales representatives, with several hundred accounts. He covers a territory that includes all five boroughs of New York City and across Long Island — including Melville, Mineola, Port Washington, Syosset, Valley Stream, and beyond. In the past year, he has been featured several times in Jamie Herzlich’s Small Business features in New York Newsday.

Robert M. Lewent, a senior account manager for Coffee Distributing Corp., a Garden City Park-based supplier of coffee and office refreshment products, does this regularly. He reads the newspapers to scout new business openings and drops by country clubs and restaurants to introduce himself and leave his card.

“This is the time to get back to the basics,” says Lewent, who also relies on referrals and networking to build his pipeline. “You have to be methodical and reanalyze everything you do.”

Last Call For Pumpkin Spice!

Pumpkin Spice — sold in both K-Cups and 2.2 ounce frac packs of ground coffee — is by far our top-selling Green Mountain seasonal coffee. What Is Alterra Coffee?

Last Friday, the Mars Drinks team visited CDC (see photos) to unveil some exciting changes to their product lineup. Beginning November 8th, Mars Drinks will offer branded products for use with their Flavia brewers. Flavia coffee and tea packets will be replaced with new product lines from Alterra Coffee Roasters and The Bright Tea Company.

Our entire sales team had a chance to taste-test the new coffees and teas, and the consensus reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Here in New York, we were not too familiar with Milwaukee-based Alterra Coffee Roasters, but the quality was immediately apparent. The single-cup Flavia technology is unchanged, but the coffee inside the packets has been improved, and in some cases, throw-weights have been increased.

Who is Alterra Coffee Roasters?

Alterra Coffee Roasters was founded in 1993 and has become a sensation in the Midwest thanks to their quality, “hardworking coffee.” Their cafes in and around the Milwaukee area have an extremely loyal following, and their coffees have been recognized for high quality throughout the specialty-coffee community. Now, Mars Drinks is partnering with Alterra to bring their coffee to the office, via the Flavia brewing system.

Who is The Bright Tea Company?

Bright Tea is a new Mars Drinks brand, formulated especially for the Flavia brew system and the office refreshments market. Mars Drinks’ expert Teaologists collaborated with the founder of Tazo Tea to reformulate each of their teas with the right balance of ingredients to produce a consistently delicious cup of tea out of your Flavia brewer.

When Can I Try It?

Unfortunately, we are prohibited from even sharing images of these exciting new Alterra coffee and Bright Tea products, let alone offering samples, before the official launch. But on November 8th, we will finally get our hands on the product, and you can check back with cdccoffee.com for a full explanation of the entire product line!

We will continue to sell the current line of Flavia coffees and teas through the beginning of December. Around that time, Flavia will no longer be available, and we will instead be selling Alterra coffee and Bright Tea Company tea for use with Flavia brewers. Production of the old Flavia packets will be discontinued, meaning they will not be available anywhere. We are very confident that anyone who enjoys Flavia will love the new Alterra and Bright Tea products.
